Joint Replacement Classes

As part of St. Joseph Mercy's dedication to providing the best joint replacement and orthopedic services in the area, highly-trained orthopedic staff offer classes in which patients learn about their treatment and care plans well in advance of their surgeries to prepare them for success.

Classes are offered twice each month for individuals planning for a total joint (knee, hip and shoulder) replacement surgery. During these informative sessions, a nurse, physical therapist and even a home care professional are available to meet you and to review what will occur during your surgery, hospital stay and return home as well as answer any additional questions you may have.

Steps to a Successful Joint Replacement

If you are thinking about a joint replacement or have one scheduled, this outline will provide valuable information as you prepare to "get into this joint"!

1. The Decision for Joint Replacement - Once you and your doctor decide on joint replacement, St. Joseph Mercy staff manages all the necessary steps for your care. They will schedule your education classes, surgery, and even home care follow-up visits. Yes, it's that simple.

2. Education Class - Before surgery, you and your family are invited to attend a class where all the details of your joint replacement will be explained by our multi-disciplinary team of care providers.

3. Day of Surgery - You will be admitted to the hospital the day of surgery. After your joint replacement surgery and some time in recovery, you will be brought to your room on our dedicated orthopedic unit. Approximately eight hours later, you will be assisted to the edge of your bed.

4. Day One after Surgery - Your therapy program will begin.

5. Get Moving - Most hip and knee replacement patients begin standing and walking with assistance of a walker and physical therapist the day after surgery. It is important to begin moving after surgery to re-establish blood flow. Most patients will be ready to go home in three days.

All total joint patients receive the benefit of individual case management by St. Joseph Mercy's Orthopedic Case Manager. The case manager will assist you in any equipment and home care needs you may have.
